Engagement rings and lab grown diamonds, for Chicago

Chicago is one of our three offices, with New York and Portland, Maine. Clients from the Gold Coast to Hyde Park, Evanston to Oak Park, work with our Chicago concierge, while every piece is bench-made in New York and shipped insured to the city by Next Day Express on orders over $1,000.

Chicago knows its jewelers: Jewelers Row on Wabash Avenue has been the city's trade street for generations. We work the same way the trade does, with documents first. Every stone shows its IGI certificate number, its exact grades and a whole-dollar price, so you can compare a stone on our site with anything you see on Wabash.

Proposal ideas

Where Chicago proposes

Six settings we would choose, from the lakefront to the glasshouses.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park Conservatory

A Victorian glasshouse from the 1890s, where the Fern Room stays green and warm through a January freeze. Admission is free.

Our tip: Weekday mornings are quietest. In the warmer months, the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is a short walk south.

Downtown

The Chicago Riverwalk

A promenade along the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River, a level below the street, with towers rising on both sides of the water.

Our tip: Go at blue hour, just after sunset, when the windows light up and reflect on the river.

The Loop

Lurie Garden, Millennium Park

Cloud Gate draws the crowds. A few minutes away, Lurie Garden is quieter: perennials and grasses, with the skyline rising behind the hedges.

Our tip: Choose late spring through early autumn, when the planting is at its fullest.

Lincoln Park lakefront

North Avenue Beach at sunrise

The lakefront faces east, so the sun comes up over Lake Michigan, and from North Avenue Beach the skyline rises to the south.

Our tip: Check the sunrise time the night before. In June it comes before 5:30 in the morning.

Hyde Park

Promontory Point

Limestone steps on a point reaching into Lake Michigan, with a wide view north to the downtown skyline.

Our tip: Late afternoon light falls across the towers and keeps the sun behind you.

East Garfield Park

Garfield Park Conservatory

A great glasshouse on the West Side, with a palm house and fern room under glass, and warm in every season.

Our tip: A good choice for a winter proposal, when the lakefront is too cold to linger.

Hours, reservations and photography rules change. Check with the venue or the Chicago Park District before you plan, and ask our concierge to time delivery so the ring arrives a few days ahead.

Engagement ring notes for Chicago

The styles of the moment, and how they wear through four real seasons.

Wearing it through a Chicago winter

  • Lake-effect cold shrinks fingers; a ring that fits in January can feel tight in July. Size indoors, late in the day.
  • Thick gloves catch on tall prongs; a bezel or a low six-prong setting suits a Chicago winter.

Care for a ring on the lakefront

  • Salt from the winter streets dulls a stone. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry well.
  • Take rings off before a swim at North Avenue Beach: cold lake water shrinks fingers and rings slip off.

Insurance in Illinois

  • Standard policies often cap jewelry theft; a scheduled rider or jewelry policy covers the full value.
  • Keep your IGI report and 2N invoice together; insurers ask for both.

The Chicago Chronicles

Short stories and guides for Chicago.

The trade

Jewelers Row, and the case for a fair price

For generations, Chicago has bought its diamonds on Wabash Avenue in the Loop, under the tracks of the L, on the stretch known as Jewelers Row. The best of the trade there taught the city a useful habit: look at the stone, read the paperwork, and ask what you are paying for.

We work the same way, only without the walk. Every 2N diamond comes with its IGI report, is held to Ideal cut with Excellent polish and symmetry, and is photographed as the exact stone you will receive. Ask our concierge for a side-by-side of any two diamonds, and compare them the way the trade does.

The city

Four stars, six points

Chicago’s flag carries four red six-pointed stars between two blue stripes for the water that shaped the city. The stars stand for Fort Dearborn, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the Century of Progress Exposition of 1933 and 1934.

Six points is a good number in jewelry too. A six-prong solitaire holds a round diamond securely and gives it a softer, rounder outline than four prongs. For a Chicago ring, it is a quiet nod to the flag that flies all over the city.

The guide

A ring for a city of four real seasons

A ring that fits on a humid July evening can feel loose in January, when the wind comes off the lake. Size at room temperature, late in the day, and if you are between sizes, our concierge will help you choose.

For daily wear through gloves, scarves and heavy coats, bezel and low settings are the most practical. A high, open setting shows off the diamond beautifully, and asks for a quick check of the prongs after the winter.
