Understanding your diamond's official grading report
An IGI Diamond Report — Your diamond's official identity document
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is one of the world's largest and most respected independent gemological laboratories. Founded in 1975, IGI operates laboratories across four continents and has certified millions of diamonds.
IGI certification provides an unbiased, expert assessment of your diamond's quality. Each diamond is evaluated by multiple gemologists using standardized criteria, ensuring consistent and accurate grading.
For lab-grown diamonds, IGI is the industry leader—they were pioneers in developing grading standards specifically for laboratory-grown diamonds and clearly identify them as such on every report.
Every diamond at 2N DIAMONDS comes with an IGI certificate, giving you complete confidence in what you're purchasing.

Detailed view of IGI grading information
Every IGI certificate includes:
Report Number: Unique identifier laser-inscribed on the diamond
Shape & Cut: The diamond's shape and cutting style
Measurements: Precise dimensions in millimeters
Carat Weight: Weight to the hundredth of a carat
Color Grade: D-Z scale rating
Clarity Grade: FL to I3 scale rating
Cut Grade: Ideal to Poor (for round brilliants)
Polish & Symmetry: Quality of finish
Fluorescence: None to Very Strong
Origin: Clearly marked "Laboratory Grown"
The back of your IGI report includes a clarity plot—a diagram showing the location, size, and type of any inclusions or blemishes found in your specific diamond.
This plot serves as your diamond's unique "fingerprint." No two diamonds have identical inclusion patterns, making this diagram useful for:
• Identification: Verify you received the certified diamond
• Insurance: Document for appraisals and claims
• Understanding: Know exactly what's inside your stone
Symbols in red indicate internal inclusions. Symbols in green indicate surface blemishes.

Microscopic laser inscription on the girdle
Every IGI-certified diamond features a laser inscription on its girdle—the thin edge between the crown and pavilion. This microscopic engraving includes the IGI report number and "LG" (Laboratory Grown) designation.
The inscription is invisible to the naked eye but easily visible under 10x magnification. It provides:
• Permanent link between diamond and certificate
• Verification that you received the correct stone
• Security in case of loss or theft
• Transparency about lab-grown origin
Your jeweler can show you the inscription using a loupe or microscope.

IGI's grading process is rigorous and designed to eliminate bias:
1. Submission: Diamonds arrive with no identifying information
about origin, owner, or expected grades.
2. Initial Assessment: A gemologist evaluates the diamond's
4Cs under standardized lighting conditions.
3. Verification: A second gemologist independently grades the
same diamond without seeing the first assessment.
4. Quality Control: A senior gemologist reviews any discrepancies
and makes final determinations.
5. Documentation: All findings are recorded and the certificate
is generated.
6. Inscription: The report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle.
