The most important factor in a diamond's beauty and brilliance
How cut quality dramatically affects light performance and beauty
Of all the 4Cs, Cut has the greatest influence on a diamond's beauty. A well-cut diamond will exhibit stunning brilliance, fire, and scintillation—the qualities that make diamonds so captivating. Even a diamond with perfect color and clarity will appear dull if poorly cut.
Cut refers to three aspects of craftsmanship:
• Proportions: The angles and relative measurements
• Symmetry: How precisely facets align
• Polish: The smoothness of each facet surface
When these elements are optimized, light enters through the table, bounces between the pavilion facets, and returns through the crown—creating maximum sparkle.
Diamond proportions showing table, crown, and pavilion angles
A masterfully cut diamond produces three distinct optical phenomena that create its mesmerizing beauty.
The total amount of white light reflected back to your eye. A well-cut diamond acts like a mirror, returning virtually all light that enters.
The dispersion of white light into spectral colors—flashes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet that dance across the diamond.
The sparkle pattern—flashes of light and dark that appear as the diamond, light source, or viewer moves. This is what makes diamonds "come alive."
The structural components of a round brilliant diamond
Table: The large, flat facet on top. Table percentage affects how light enters and exits.
Crown: The upper portion above the girdle. Crown angle affects fire dispersion.
Girdle: The thin perimeter where crown meets pavilion. Should be even and not too thick or thin.
Pavilion: The lower portion below the girdle. Pavilion depth is critical for light return.
Culet: The tiny facet at the bottom point. Ideally none or very small.
Each measurement must fall within precise ranges for optimal light performance. Even small deviations can cause light to leak out the sides or bottom instead of returning through the top.
At 2N DIAMONDS, we primarily offer Ideal and Excellent cut grades to ensure every diamond delivers maximum visual impact.
Symmetry refers to how precisely the facets align and mirror each other. Poor symmetry can misdirect light, reducing brilliance and creating an unbalanced appearance.
Polish describes the smoothness of each facet's surface. Microscopic polish lines or marks can interfere with light transmission, though they're rarely visible to the naked eye.
Both symmetry and polish are graded on the same scale: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.
Our recommendation: For maximum beauty, choose diamonds with at least Very Good symmetry and polish. Excellent is ideal if budget allows.

The coveted Hearts & Arrows pattern
Hearts & Arrows is not a separate cut grade but rather a visual phenomenon that appears only in round brilliant diamonds with exceptional symmetry and precise proportions.
When viewed through a special Hearts & Arrows scope:
• From the bottom: 8 symmetrical heart shapes appear
• From the top: 8 evenly-spaced arrow shapes appear
This pattern indicates that every facet is perfectly aligned. Hearts & Arrows diamonds represent the pinnacle of cutting precision and typically command premium prices for their superior light performance.
At 2N DIAMONDS, many of our Ideal cut round brilliants display Hearts & Arrows patterns—contact our concierge to inquire about specific stones.
The bow-tie effect is a dark area resembling a bow-tie that appears across the center of elongated fancy shapes like Oval, Marquise, and Pear diamonds.
Some bow-tie is normal and even desirable in these shapes—it adds contrast and depth. However, a severe bow-tie creates an obvious dark band that diminishes the diamond's beauty.
The bow-tie results from how light reflects off the pavilion facets in elongated shapes. Expert cutting minimizes this effect while maintaining optimal proportions.
Tip: Always view oval, marquise, and pear diamonds in person or request detailed videos to assess bow-tie severity before purchasing.
