IGI vs GIA
Two respected labs, one grading standard — here is the honest difference for lab-grown diamonds
Is IGI as trustworthy as GIA?
Yes. Both the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are independent, non-profit-adjacent labs that grade a diamond's cut, color, clarity, and carat weight against the same underlying 4Cs framework GIA itself created in the 1950s. A diamond does not get a "softer" grade because it went to one lab instead of the other — it gets graded by trained gemologists under standardized lighting, working from the same vocabulary the entire trade uses.
What's the actual difference?
GIA, founded in 1931, built its name grading mined diamonds and is the lab most older engagement rings and estate pieces carry. It has historically been more conservative in how it grades and was slower to build out lab-grown-specific reporting.
IGI, founded in 1975, grew alongside the lab-grown diamond category and was among the first major labs to build a dedicated report format for laboratory-grown stones — clearly marked "Laboratory Grown" on every certificate, with the same shape, measurements, color, clarity, cut, polish, symmetry, and fluorescence fields as a mined-diamond report. Today IGI certifies the large majority of the lab-grown diamonds sold at retail worldwide, which means its lab-grown grading pipeline — the equipment, the gemologist training, the volume of stones a grader has seen — is built specifically around this category, not adapted from mined-diamond grading after the fact.

Why does 2N Diamonds certify through IGI?
Because every stone we sell is lab-grown, and IGI's lab-grown-specific grading pipeline is the one built for exactly this category. Every 2N diamond carries an IGI report with the origin printed in plain language, a laser inscription on the girdle linking the physical stone to its certificate number, and a clarity plot you can check against the diamond in hand. Quick Answers
Does IGI grade diamonds more leniently than GIA?
No — both labs grade against the same 4Cs standard. Perceived differences in the market usually
come from comparing an IGI-graded lab-grown stone to a GIA-graded mined stone of a different
actual quality, not from the labs disagreeing on the same diamond.
Can a lab-grown diamond be graded by GIA instead of IGI?
Yes, GIA does grade lab-grown diamonds. IGI simply certifies the majority of lab-grown stones
sold at retail today, which is why it is the standard report you will see across the category.
Is an IGI report accepted by insurers and appraisers?
Yes. IGI certificates are recognized worldwide by jewelers, insurers, and independent appraisers
the same way GIA reports are.
