Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Hold Their Value?

An honest answer, not a sales pitch

The honest answer

No diamond — lab-grown or mined — is a resale investment, and we would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out later. Diamonds are a retail product with a large markup built in at every step between mine or reactor and store shelf. The moment any diamond leaves a jeweler as a finished piece, it is worth meaningfully less on the secondary market than what was paid for it. That is true of a $20,000 mined solitaire from a name on Fifth Avenue and it is true of a lab-grown stone. Neither one is gold or a stock certificate.

When does resale value actually matter?

If you are buying a diamond specifically as a financial asset you intend to sell, neither lab-grown nor mined retail diamonds are the right vehicle — that is a job for investment-grade gemstones sold through auction houses, not a jewelry counter. If you are buying a piece to wear, propose with, or pass down, the question that actually matters is whether you love the stone and whether the price let you get the size and clarity you wanted. That is the honest frame we would want if we were the ones buying.
